A JSA is not a legal requirement, however it can form part of your worksite’s Work Health and Safety Management plan.
It is important to remember that every employer has a duty of care to their staff. In other words, they have an obligation to ensure the safety, health and wellbeing of their employees in every aspect of their business. The purpose of a JSA is to encourage and implement safe work practices.
The purpose of a JSA
The main purpose of a Job Safety Analysis is to ensure worksite tasks are completed safely, so workers are safeguarded against injury. The JSA does this by identifying the hazards associated with performing each job/task. Once the hazards have been documented, workers can determine the control measures required, and outline the safest way to complete the job/task within the parameters they’ve identified.
A Job Safety Analysis also documents who is responsible for executing the control measures and ensuring each step is carried out appropriately.
It is important to monitor and review a JSA. Amendments and updates are documented as new risks are identified. Processes are then refined.
A Job Safety Analysis should be carried out when:
- There are potential risks associated with the job/task at hand
- There are any safety concerns with the job
- The task presents complexities/is difficult to understand with just verbal instruction
- The job hasn’t been carried out before
- The job has been carried out before, but has resulted in injury or near-miss
- There are new workers on site, or new equipment and machinery
